THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED

WATER MILL MUSEUM

KNIVES IN THE COLONIES AND TODAY

SEPTEMBER 7th at 7 PM

Eating at the dinner table was different in early colonial times. A typical family would stand around the table because there were not enough chairs for everyone. They would eat mostly with their hands. The main utensil was a knife. Shared utensils, bowls, and wooden cups passed from mouth to mouth. Although communal tableware was born of necessity, it was also customary, as the Puritan ethic espoused frugality and simplicity.
Fast forward to today, knives are still an important utensil and tool. One of our guest speakers, Donald Newman, of Sharp Cat Knife Sharpening, will speak about the history of knives, types of knives, what makes a good knife and how to care for and sharpen it. We will also be shown knife skills by Jay Lippin, Chef in Residence and winner of the TV show “Chopped” as he helps us to be more efficient in the kitchen.
These facts and chatter are guaranteed to inspire AND entertain you!
